While a trademark in Bahia, Brazil, the bright colored ribbons with Lembranca do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia etched on the ribbon are not often seen in other parts of the world. Wearers of the ribbons claim miraculous powers, protection from evils and fulfillment of wishes. Perhaps the tradition is being guarded by those who know best.
Translated ‘Lembranca do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia‘ says, “Remembrance of the lord of Good End, savior of Bahia, or Souvenir from the God of Bahia. The Church of Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia became guardian of the city, provider of miracles and granter of wishes. Droves of people still flock there today in search of miracles.
Tradition has it that you have a friend wrap the band around your wrist and tie three knots. You make a wish with each knot and when the band falls off of its own accord, your wishes are to come true.
Bahia Bands are sold on the streets of Bahia near the Church Senhor do Bonfim. The names attributed to the ribbons vary, but the writing on the bracelets remains the same: Lembranca do Senhor do Bonfim da Bahia.
